Theme: W.H. Auden’s “September 1,1939” is a poem about war and the futility of war. Though the subject is serious, the setting may seem inappropriate. As the poem begins,we see that the poet is sitting at a bar and describing the devastating effect of the second world war. The poet here expresses his feelings of uncertainty and fear of war and national and private life. There are only shadows of death everywhere because of the war.
